About my work
My artwork explores our evolving relationship with the natural world. My inspiration stems from my upbringing in Northumberland where I was constantly intrigued by the things living around me and the restless nature of the surrounding environment. I’ve always found great joy when observing subjects that are non-human, such as animals, plants & uninhabited landscapes. However, I’ve become intrigued over the years by our current relationship with technology and how the world around us is constantly changing form. While my aesthetic is mainly inspired by art movements such as Futurism and German Expressionism (with particular reference to Franz Marc), these modern themes are simultaneously brought into focus. The delicate, geometric components that build up each painting are puzzle-like in appearance, capturing this constant play between the natural and the artificial. By breaking the image down and reconstructing it, our perception becomes distorted, bringing a new dimension to the world around us. When looking closely, each segment is made up of smooth colours and fine edges. I find these processes therapeutic, allowing me to find peace in a world which is quite chaotic.
